We moved really slowly, so as to not spook them them, and always went upstream so that our scent would not move towards them. My father told me that the light confuses them and makes them hold still long enough to stick them. But that seems a little far-fetched to me, haha. I was never very good at it, but he and my grandfather were pros.

I really miss the ice fishing... We used to chop holes in a line across the river, and send people up river to come down and pound on the ice with poles, and drive the fish down. Then we snared them out with a loop of wire on the end of a pole.

But it does not get cold enough for the river to freeze here anymore.
