The story in this song goes roughly as follows:
First he mentions a girl who didn't want to come with him, and that's why it is only him and his horse riding a sleigh down a countryside road. The sky is getting darker, and he cheers the horse to keep running on. He praises his horse, as the horse it his only treasure, the best horse in the world. He ponders about his life, how he doesn't have a steady job so he has to drive down these roads finding seasonal work here and there to sustain himself. And in the last verse he knows that soon they will arrive at a small house where lives a girl with cherry lips, and that's where they are going to stop at. The song ends with that, it doesn't tell if he is going to settle down to live with that beautiful girl, or if that is just an another one-night stop for the wild guy who he is.
