Oh how do I love the scent of freshly cut spruce timber in the freshness of slightly sub-freezing air. In the absence of blossoming flowers, the winter air has no smell to it, which is a rather good background - I mean, just like in deep darkness you can easily spot even a little speck of dim light, so against the neutrality of winter air all the subtle scents appear as amplified and easier to detect. Freshly cut spruce timber emits a spicy tree sap odour.
